Searching for Artistic Director (Virtual) for Tone Cluster – quite a queer choir

Job Title: Artistic Director (Virtual) Part-time contract position

Duration: One season (September 2020 to July 2021)

Work location: Virtually with the choir based in Ottawa, ON

Rehearsals: Monday evenings from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM (Eastern time)

Area of Selection: Open to applicants from across Canada; preference may be given to those within commuting distance to Ottawa

Remuneration: Commensurate with experience

Tone Cluster – quite a queer choir is an auditioned 35 voice choir for those of varied sexual orientation, gender identity, relationship orientation, and their friends. Sometimes cheerful, sometimes poignant, our varied repertoire, from madrigals to jazz to musical theatre and beyond reflects the joys and struggles faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community. Recent highlights include multi-movement choral pieces such as Quiet No More: A Choral Celebration of Stonewall, and Tyler’s Suite, dedicated to the memory of Tyler Clementi. We are excited to make our virtual debut this 2020-2021 season and are looking for an Artistic Director who will help us reach new heights as we strive for excellence and celebrate diversity in music and in community.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for the artistic direction of the choir and shall develop, rehearse and conduct a program of rehearsals, learning activities and performances. It is envisaged that this will be done primarily in a virtual environment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following key qualifications:

  • post-secondary training in music with an emphasis in choral conducting;
  • a minimum of 2 years of experience conducting a choir;
  • some experience and/or a reasonable level of comfort with the use of technology to carry out the artistic activities of a choir;
  • experience in designing, coordinating and directing choral programming;
  • a commitment to embracing the mission of the choir.

Interviews will be conducted towards the end of August by video chat and a shortlist of candidates will be invited to lead a virtual rehearsal in the month of September.
